Vaccine FAQ
Q: What if I don’t have insurance or a regular doctor, can I still get the COVID-19 vaccine?
A: COVID-19 vaccinations are free for EVERYONE. The DCYHC can help and refer you to one of the sites that offers the vaccine. You can also visit https://myturn.ca.gov/ to find sites near you and schedule your COVID vaccine appointment.
Q: I have insurance but not a regular doctor, can I still get the COVID-19 vaccine?
A: If you have Medi-CAL, we will refer you to a clinic where you will be able to get a vaccine. If you have private insurance, such as Kaiser, BlueShield, Aetna, etc., we will instruct you to ask member services through your insurance provider.
Q: I have insurance and a primary care provider where can I get a COVID-19 vaccine?
A: If you have a primary care physician (PCP), please reach out to them as they might provide COVID-19 vaccines. The DCYHC will refer you to one of the sites that offers COVID vaccinations. You can also visit https://myturn.ca.gov/ to find sites near you to schedule your appointment.
Q: I am a new patient at the DCYHC and I have no insurance, am I still able to receive my general vaccines?
A: The DCYHC will have you fill out a form in the clinic to see if you qualify for Gateway, Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP), a temporary Medi-Cal program, by requesting your parents’ monthly and/or yearly income to see if you qualify. Gateway is offered for patients ages 21 and under. If you do qualify after filling out the form, the temporary Medi-Cal program will last for up to 30 days. After 30 days, payments will be out of pocket. It is highly recommended that you apply for Medi-Cal during the 30 days. You will have to establish care/get a physical first after filling out the form and qualifying. After this, you can get your vaccine(s). It is possible to complete the physical checkup and get vaccinated on the same day.
Q: What if I need a vaccine but do not want a physical?
A: If you do not want a physical but do need a vaccine or other service (urgent care, primary care, screening, adult school and work physicals, family planning, referrals for mental health services) you can visit the San Mateo County Medical Van. No appointments are necessary and if you have Medi-Cal the services through the van will be free.
If you have private or no insurance, you will have to pay a fee for the service provided, but no additional fees will be added to the original fee of service.
